Mother's Day

We Gather as the Body of Christ

WELCOME, ANNOUNCEMENTS, AND

FUNNY STORY     Pastor Bob

CENTERING WORDS

Pastor Bob

Christ is our shepherd, who knows us and calls us. Our shepherd gives us eternal life; no one can snatch us from his hands.

MOTHERS DAY PRAYER

God, like a mother hen you long to collect your chicks under your wings of protection. On this Mother’s Day, we pray for those for whom this is a difficult day. No mother or father is perfect, only you. May the words from my mouth bring hope and healing, pointing to you, and the abundant eternal life you offer. Amen.

CALL TO WORSHIP  (Responsive Reading)

Jean Kelly – Liturgist

Although we use the metaphor of God as father far more often than God as mother, it may be helpful to remind everyone, in the context of worship, that there are many metaphors for God.

L:  Holy God, we strive to know you, to learn about you, and to understand what is far beyond our comprehension. We use our human language and metaphors to describe you, but even as we do, we realize their limits. For we cannot know you fully until we see you face to face. Like the best kind of earthly father,

P:  You care and provide for us. You guide and protect your

      children.

L:  Like a mother hen who places her wing around her chicks,

P:  You hold us safe from harm. We are nestled in your

      goodness and grace.

L:  Like a shepherd who guards wandering flocks,

P:  You lead us to green pastures, where we can be nourished.

You show us still waters, where we can drink deeply of

life abundant. You provide opportunities for us to find rest.

L:  Like a mighty rock,

P:  You are strong and provide for us a fortress, where the

worldly cares and daily drama need not beat us up.

L:  You are a light in our darkness,

P:  Shining your warmth into the shadows in our lives.

L: You are a king to whom we pledge our lives. A judge who calls for

 justice and righteousness.

P:  You are the first and the last, the beginning and the end.

L: Unknowable. Unnamable. Yet known and named. Beyond the limits of

our language. Beyond us yet with us. With us always. Amen.

Pastor Bob

Pastor Bob: The Lord is our shepherd; we shall not want.

P: We lie down in green pastures and drink from still waters.

Pastor Bob: Our shepherd restores our souls.

P: Even though we walk through the darkest valleys, we fear no
