CENTERING WORDS    (Psalm 147)

Pastor Bob

Those who trust God will rise up

with wings like eagles.

CALL TO WORSHIP    (Isaiah 40)

Sharon Stewart - Liturgist

In Isaiah 40:28, we read: Have you not known?

Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God,

the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable. (NRSV)

Those two questions – Have you not known? Have you not heard? – are rhetorical questions. That is, they don’t require an answer because the answer is “Of course.” Of course we have known that God our Creator is everlasting. Of course we have heard that God doesn’t tire or grow weary. We know but we forget. We know but we allow our schedules to get crowded with a lot of things that make us weary and we allow our hearts to get crowded with a lot of things that can challenge our understanding.

So we come to worship to be reminded. That God’s understanding is far beyond our own. That God’s strength is available to us when we need it the most.

Let us worship the Lord together.

OPENING PRAYER    (Isaiah 40)

(Unison)    Sharon Stewart

Raise us up, O Lord, when we are weary

and feel heavy with our earthly concerns.

Raise us up, O God, when we feel like

it’s hard to walk forward, let alone

run with joy and with hope.

Raise us up, O Lord, so that by your

grace and with your help, we can

surrender to you and your desire

for us -- so that we can soar,

as with the wings of eagles,

and experience the freedom and

perspective that you desire for us to

have. We pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.

BENEDICTION    (Isaiah 40)

A Responsive Benediction      Pastor Bob

Though our lives often seem overwhelming,

in God, we shall mount up with wings like eagles.

Though our responsibilities weigh us down,

in Christ, we shall run and not be weary.

Though injustice and discord sap our strength,

in the Spirit, we shall walk and not faint.

May the grace of Jesus our Redeemer, the love of God our Creator and the nurturing of the Holy Spirit our Sustainer be with you this week and always, Amen.
